Merrell Adventure Run 2011

On this race, I had my revenge... I reclaimed the victory, and it was indeed a great, real trail-running experience!

Comparing to last year's Merrell Adventure Run at Wawa, Montalban where I almost dreaded the race (read the story here) and disliked the organizer (sorry Sir Thumbie), this time, the Merrell Adventure Run 2011 held at the Timberland Heights in San Mateo, Rizal, exceeded my expectations and I could say, even the expectations of the more than 1,500 runners who participated in the said event.

With only less than an hour of sleep, I arrived at the venue around 4AM together with some Employees/Runners of Agatep (thanks to you as always). It was still early and I have much time to roam around. The temperature was so cool, and the rain shower would come and go every once in a while that kept the ground and the trail course of Timberland wet.

I went to the starting line just to get a glimpse of what lays ahead for the runners, and what first struck my eyes were - mud and muddy-waters! And a few meters ahead of the starting line, all I could see is darkness with some leaves and grass on the sideways. I shivered with excitement coupled with the cool breeze of air. Still having plenty of time, I went to the booth of Alaska which was the first booth that was able to set-up that early, already serving pan-de-sal breakfast and Alaska Milk and Choco for the early-bird runners.

The blue sky promises a great day ahead
Just as the day breaks, more runners filled up the area, a lot of ladies I could say for such a challenging run ahead. Whether they know what a trail run is or not, I'm sure they're all up for the adventure. Some elite runners also flocked in, as well as this "rat runner" (Rey Lumauag) who were there to take the challenge despite being not in good condition as he's suffering from dry cough.

At the starting line after the 21k gun-start fired, the 10k runners were gathered. There I met some aNR-UP Heartbreakers and other co-runners from the Six:30 running group.

As we started traversing the trails, the adventure and challenge almost never stopped. Just the moment you stepped out from the starting line, it was already a challenge how to get past from all other runners as you can't help but to slowdown else suffer an early fall on the slippery rocks and muds. I brought a digicam with me to take shots of the sceneries as I get past to it, with the runners crossing the rivers, trekking the hills, dancing on the mud, jumping on the terrains, falling down and all.

I fell down twice on the entire course, once on my right butt on a muddy downhill going to the river, and the second one was on my left butt on another muddy slope. Slipped a few times, got almost overthrown as I sped down losing control of my strides. Thankfully there were small trees and branches that I was able to grab, while overturning my body to the opposite direction as I hold on. Single track of trails from moderately-easy to traverse to the most challenging one that it almost looks like a "kumonoy" were also unavoidable.

The entire course gave me new knowledge in running the trails, muddy trails specifically. I learned that the techniques in road running (proper form, proper stride) will not always be applicable. Somehow, I was only able to maintain a proper breathing most of the time.

To get past on the muddy trails, you will need not just your forefoot nor your midfoot, but you will need all the parts of your feet even your knees and legs on the ground. Your toes will also play a vital role to help you grip, and you may even crawl if you must. Leg, core, and over-all body strength are also essential to keep you running and protected from injuries. Also most of the time, the sidetracks of the trails have more grip so it'll be a better choice to run on it rather than on the middle-track where all you could see are skid marks or buried shoes. Sometimes, you don't have to run the trails also, side-to-side skipping and leaping will let you easily pass through a flat but muddy trail. And when you fall down, your body's agility and the strength of your hands, arms and shoulder will be your saving partner to help you easily get up if you don't want somebody to notice your butt-hampering moment.

What else can I say, but to give everyone a pat on the shoulder. The race was superb, hydrations (from LightWater - really light indeed) are more than enough, plenty of friendly and helpful Marshalls throughout the entire course, and a very good choice of date and venue.

All hail to Merrell Team for such a great adventure;

High-five to Sir Jeff for the given opportunity to be part of this year's adventure run;

Need somebody to run your errands? Book your next run, and let Runner'sRunner (RR) do it for you!

Runner'sRunner has already been around the running scene in the Metro for more than a year now since it's conceptualization on February 2010 (read the story of RR's origin). Independence Day Run

More than a year ago (ooppss sorry, I have another super late post), I joined the Philippine Independence Day Half Marathon 2010. Organized by the Center for International Education (CIE) Global Colleges Manila, it was a race with high ambition to boast of having been held right during the celebration of the Country's 112th Independence Day.

It made many of the Patriotic runners give their best and expect a good turnaround of the event. Unfortunately, those expectations died a noble memory for most of the participants. Mine as well. But what failed me was not just how the race turned out, but mostly on how I performed for this run. I failed myself, I failed my own personal expectation!

What happened? During this race, it was when my plantar fascia started bothering me. And how it began was purely my fault also. Barely three weeks before this race, I just had my very first full Marathon (May 22), where I used a shoe not intended for a road race, much more for such long distance. Then just a week and a few days after this full (May 30), I was foolish enough to run a 21k distance race-pace as a very late "recovery" run, where I also achieved my first 21k PR (personal record). Then two weeks after (Jun 12), came this event - another 21k race for me less than a month after my full marathon.

So what's wrong with a full Marathon and a continued series of Pikermi in less than a month? Well this is just my personal experience but for me, my own fitness level during that time is still not ready for such kind of stress. During the May 30 21k race that I did, I was already feeling some unknown pains on my right foot. Then after the Independence Day Half Marathon (Jun 12), I realized that I am already suffering from a right foot injury - the Plantar Fasciitis.

What also attributed to this injury was not just the continued stress that I had with those races, but I think, it was also for the wrong type of apparel, (specifically the shoe in this case) that I used during the Marathon (May 22). The shoe was designed for trail running, not for road, and not for a Marathon distance. It was a Reebok Trail Crossback, size US 7.5. Just from the name itself, you'll know it's not meant for a road race, but foolish me! On my succeeding races (the two series of 21k), the shoe was right for my foot type as it was referenced from my Gait Analysis. But I remember when I bought my Adizero Boston (size US 7.5 also), the sales man advised me that the shoe was not designed for races longer than 10k. But heck, I thought I am just a light-weighted runner so racing the shoe up to 21k distance won't matter at all. Yes indeed it won't, but not if you're already suffering from an injury.

On running, the skill, fitness, and training does matter so much! But in the end, the kind of running shoes that we wear also matters a lot as we can't give our full effort/potential during a race if we're already suffering from an apparel-caused injury.

Speaking of running shoes, I just learned that there will be a new running shoe arriving soon in the Country (Philippines). I have checked their website and it's kind of promising given the fact that the shoe absorbs both the vertical and horizontal impact that our foot gets as it lands. I like the color combination of their black/lime CloudSurfer model, but it seems that the CloudRunner will be more functional for me for my near-future plans of running an Ultra-race. Yeah it's ON!

So how did my race turned-out? I finished the entire course at 1 hour, 47 minutes and 1 second, ranking 167th out of the 619 category Finishers. Fast you say? Well, the other thing that saddened me was that after I got my Finisher's medal, it turned out that the course was short of 3 kilometer distance as measured by my co-runners through their GPS-enabled watch.

The Reebok Trail Crossback, it performs well on trails, but not on road.
ON CloudRunner, does it really perform well? Let me try... ;)

Just last March during one of the PressCons of one of the running events, Dennis (RunningFatboy) and I were talking about The Great Wall of China Marathon. I was so amazed with Dennis' story and accounts of other runners they came across to during their race at the Great Wall. Racing Like A Rat

(A quarter-year late story)

There are chances on my running days when either I don't feel at my best or I don't feel like running at all. When I hit those days, it's also either I don't attend the race at all adding another bib on my DNR (did not race) collections, or I don't finish with a good record to beat.

Though last March 13, 2011, the case has been reversed from what usually happens when I'm on my "not-so-good-running-day".

I was supposed to join only a 1K fun walk together with the Nuns, Women, Children, and other non-runner participants. Unfortunately at the registration booth, since there were no longer available 1k race kits, I was just given a 3k race category. I was hoping that I could still swap it with other runners from the 1k category so I approached a woman in an all-white-dress and asked if we could exchange race bibs, she would run the 3k, while I'll do the walking for her 1k, the reply was just a blank stare at me!

So the story began as the gun-start was fired. Due to lack of trainings and lack of sleep, I was just leisurely jogging and planned to do it for the rest of the route. When after just a few meters away from the starting line, another runner ahead of me stopped and glanced at me with some kind of question or disbelief from his face while looking at me. I thought he was looking at somebody else but I got confused when he suddenly said: "Tara banatan natin 'to, walang malalakas eh!". I looked at my back to see if he was talking to someone else but I was dumb-founded while my mind was having a speedy recall of his face if we have ever crossed at any point from Takbo.ph, aNR, or at other races. But I was sure I didn't know who the guy was. Then he insisted again for me to speed up but I resisted since I have barely slept the night before and even all the previous nights of the previous weeks. I really wasn't in good condition to give an all-out performance.

While he can't convince me yet, he then asked if he can just run my bib number (he doesn't have his own race bib) so we could still get to grab a top finish, but I still refused. I thought he'd get irritated that I didn't give-in to any of his summoning and he'll leave me alone, but he wasn't. His last resort of convincing was when he told me: "Tara, pace ka na lang sa akin, kaya pa natin silang habulin."

His statement sounded like a challenge to me that I immediately agreed and forgot for a moment that I was running zombie-mode. So right when we were about to climb the hills of McKinley, he ran his pace, a real fast pace for me but it looks like he was only relaxingly striding on that uphill road. I forced myself to follow suit his running form and inhaled great amount of oxygen and gushed out the same.

This was the first time that I sprinted the McKinley hills, and upon reaching the U-turn at the top, I was still running fast downwards, trying to chase this unexpected pacer. But oh how great was the feel of passing a lot of other runners! The wind slicing through me as I overtake each of them and feeling the experience of running like an elite (lol)!

A few meters away from the hydration station, I felt that my mouth and esophagus were already dry due to the consistent blowing of oxygen. It felt like my jaw would stuck-up! When I was already about to grab the cup of water, this guy, this pacer, this rat runner who just showed up and forced me to pump my leg muscles, heart, and lungs out, upon seeing that the other speeding runners are already behind me, yelled at me: "huwag ka nang uminom, nanjan na sila, tara na!". How cruel I thought, but like a mob who's about to get caught by the mass number of angry people and Police officers, I was automatically pushed to run like crazy! The thought of it while running made me smile inside but at the same time wanting to get mad at this guy.

Calves wasn't hardening, but my quads and legs already felt like burning and started to become heavy. He was at my back this time and he noticed it so again, I heard another yell "i-angat mo paa mo". Yeah I needed all those motivations! Then a few more hundred meters from the finish line, he told me (this time it was no yelling): "ibuga mo na, ilabas mo na lahat, konti na lang". On my approximation though, I know the remainig route's still long enough for me to push my remaining strength. I inhaled deep and exhaled it out but I think that I'm done as I was already feeling dizzy, my sight started to become blurred, and my chest is aching as if I'm about to pass out. Again I heard, "ibuga mo pa, kaya mo pa yan!"

Then I saw two other runners in front of me. "Buga, buga lang, tapos itakbo mo na!" Hearing that phrase: "...itakbo mo na", I thought to myself, do I look to him like I'm just walking?

When I could almost ascertain that the finish line's just around a hundred meters away, I did three more batch of deep inhales and exhale, re-composed my body, lifted my collapsing shoulder, core, hips and legs, and gave out my remaining strength. My legs still feels heavy, I was able to add a few amount of speed but I can no longer chase the other two runners ahead of me. At the final turn towards the finish, the other two have just crossed the glory line. My pacer already stopped a few meters away from me while I stayed on just to keep my position and not let whoever was on my back also trying to chase what I am chasing for. Finish line, finally over! I finished third if the two runners ahead were the 1st and 2nd placers, but the time-keepers didn't asked for my name. Later we learned that I just placed sixth, and the other two were the 4th and 5th finishers.

All of those cruelty, suffering, pushing and giving my all - for a sixth place. But hey I realized, it's not actually the position that made my race day a good one. It was the experience of pushing myself to its utmost limit - that I haven't done before! I want to get mad to the guy, but it was really worth it that he pushed me. It was all worth more than any prize.

After the race, I get to know my pacer's real name - Rey Lumauag, older brother of Regie Lumauag - one of the top grabber of 5k and 10k race podium places. But still, I don't know the reason why Regie targeted to pace me. He could've chosen other stronger and faster runners, but why it seemed like he knew me even before the gun-start?

A few weeks after this race, I was reminiscing some photos from the 1st aNR 5th Sunday Run that was held last January 30 when I came to this captured photo taken by Brando Losaria:
